You’ve attracted a visitor to your online store, they’ve browsed your products, added items to their cart… and they disappear. No purchase. Another lost opportunity.

Sadly, abandoned shopping carts are something that every eCommerce company has to deal with from small startups to global giants. The good news is that you can greatly reduce the amount of customers that do this by making certain changes to your site and service.

This first involves understanding the major causes of shopping cart abandonment. Why do customers change their mind at the last minute? There are a few different reasons, which this post explores.

Cause #1: No Guest Checkout

When you’re in a hurry to make a purchase, nothing is more frustrating than being told you need to ‘create an account’ first. This means having to come up with another username and password, and potentially having to tick extra boxes and fill in extra information before you can get to the checkout.

While forcing customers to create an account can help you to gather more data, make the purchase more secure and potentially encourage more people to opt-in to your mailing list, it can also create friction and sometimes cause you to lose out on sales. This is why a ‘guest checkout’ option is always advised.

This should be a quick alternative checkout option that asks for minimal information, encouraging impatient or privacy-conscious buyers to follow through with their purchase.

Another strategy that some eCommerce businesses use is to ask customers to create an account after they’ve made a purchase – this gets the purchase out of the way first before asking customers to commit to creating an account.

For complex products that require lots of information to fill in, consider enabling auto-fill and add a progress bar below to motivate customers to keep going so they don’t feel trapped in an endless form.

Cause #2: Unexpected Added Fees

Some customers may feel that they’ve been scammed if the final price isn’t the same as the price advertised upfront. They may have gone into the purchase with a tight budget. Alternatively, they may lose trust due to lack of transparency.

With fees like shipping fees, packaging fees, taxes and handling charges, it’s best to advertise them alongside the initial price rather than ambushing the customer with them right before they pay. This could include advertising the price without these fees and then the price with these fees next to it or below.

In some cases, it may even be useful to add a calculator so that customers can work out the cost of any extras before they enter the checkout process.

Cause #3: Slow Shipping Options

Lengthy shipping times are another major cause of shopping cart abandonment. Most online shoppers these days are used to fast delivery. 3 days is now seen as the standard – with many shoppers expecting the additional choice of fast shipping.

If many of your customers are based far away and you’re getting lots of abandoned shopping carts, consider whether slow shipping may be a cause. By working with a Fulfilment company that can arrange speedy shipping for you, you could give customers the option of faster delivery.

This is recommended if you sell items that customers are likely to need in a hurry such as home essentials or popular gift products. You could even look into options like drop-shipping to provide next day delivery in various locations, which could greatly increase the number of purchases you get if you sell emergency goods.

Cause #4: Security Concerns

Trust is everything in eCommerce. If a shopper doesn’t feel confident that their data and payment details are safe, they won’t complete the transaction – no matter how much they like your product.

Make sure that you’re not spooking customers without outdated design, browser warnings or a checkout page that opens in a different window. Keep the layout clean, display clear trust badges, include a privacy policy on your site and apply for an SSL certificate (this is vital for accepting payments).

To help you improve the security of your site, it might be worth working with a website developer or cybersecurity consultants. Always get technical support if you think your site has been hacked or warnings display when you try to visit it.

Cause #5: Limited Payment Methods

Not all customers will pay using the same methods, so you need to provide a degree of flexibility. Customers could get put off if you don’t accept credit cards, if you don’t support popular digital wallets like Apple Pay or Google Pay, or if you don’t offer finance or BNPL options with big ticket items.

Use a payment provider that supports lots of different payment solutions. Make sure to compare fees – while increasing your payment options could lead to more customers, you don’t want to pay huge extra fees.

If you’re selling to customers in different countries, it could be important to accept different currencies. A multi-currency bank account might be worth setting up.

Cause #6: Lower Competitor Pricing

Some online shoppers like to compare prices before they commit to a purchase. They could have multiple tabs open for different stores. As soon as they find a cheaper option, they’re likely to abandon your store.

How do you combat this? By regularly doing competitor research and comparing prices of rival stores. If they’re selling the same product for a lower price, you may want to consider whether it’s time to lower your pricing.

Sometimes it’s not always pricing that converts a customer but a better warranty or loyalty rewards. Take your time browsing competitor stores and determine whether your store is good value.

Start reducing shopping cart abandonment today

Shopping cart abandonment will never be zero – some people treat shopping carts as wishlists or simply get interrupted and forget to come back. However, by addressing some of the causes above, you can greatly reduce the majority of cases. Consider also sending out abandoned shopping cart reminder emails or using push notifications to encourage shoppers to commit to their purchase.

Starting an online business can be a big goal for many people. Yet, even when you have an idea of what you want to do as an entrepreneur, it can be hard to get things underway. This is why it’s so important for you to create the right structure for your business. In this blog post, we are going to show you how to do it so that you can get things underway.

Design Your Brand to Structure Your Online Business

First of all, you will find that it is important for you to focus on designing your brand. When you want to build an online presence, you need to ensure that your visuals support that. Knowing what you want to achieve and what your business stands for is important here. You can then begin to build your brand image around that. Choosing fonts, colors, and a logo that will clearly communicate what you’re all about.

Build Your Website

When you have your branding underway, you can then start to build your website. Working with a designer makes this process easier. A great designer can take your vision and the plans you have for your business and turn that into a functional website that not only looks great but is easy to use and keeps your visitors engaged.

Create a Checkout Process

Alongside that, you also need to make sure that you have a streamlined checkout process. Whether you’re selling a service, digital products, or physical products, it’s important to make sure that your checkout is both secure and easy to use. For this, you may need to bring in something like multi-currency payment processing from Inoviopay for ease and security. You also need to ensure that you capture all of the right data to process your orders, but ensure that you abide by data protection laws in the process.

Manage Your Operations to Structure Your Online Business

However, it’s not just the visual and sales aspects that you need to get in line. It’s natural to want to focus on building out your brand, sales, and marketing processes from the beginning so that you can build traction, but you often need to go beyond that. You also need to focus on the backend of the business. Bringing in the right project management software will help you to stay organized and have a clear view of what you need to do. That helps you to keep your operations in check.

Take Time for Growth and Organization

As a new business owner, you will feel as if you’re always finding your feet. Just when you get into the swing of things, you might be thrown a curveball or whatever you’re doing will change. But that’s just the dynamic nature of business! Rather than worrying about it , make sure that you’re approaching the operational side of things with intent. This is why it’s so important to be proactive with both the growth you’re looking for and how you stay organized in business. Once you’ve set up the majority of the main business areas, you can dedicate more of your time to overseeing your operations and driving growth. This will ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible.

In a previous article, Fred Campos delved into the importance of branding for business success. The core of your branding efforts is your business name, making it crucial to choose one carefully. It’s advisable to use the same name for your URL or domain and social media pages for consistency. That’s why some business owners try to find available domain names first before creating a list of potential business names. This way, you won’t run into the trouble of deciding on a name only to find out you can’t use a web address with it because the domain is taken.

The truth, however, is that finding a fitting name is easier said than done. There are several considerations, including your company’s vision and its products or services, marketing potential, and how the name matches other design elements in your website. Ticking all of these boxes take time and resources. Some budding entrepreneurs even hire consultants for planning and launching their company, which also covers naming and other branding aspects.

The good news is there are digital tools that can help you accomplish this task. A domain and social media name checker can save you from a lot of headaches in trying to find the right name for your business. Continue reading below to learn about its main uses.

Domain & Social Media Name Checker – Speeds Up the Process

At the time of writing, there are more than 639 million registered domains worldwide as shown in a report from Domain Name Stat. Thousands more are added every month. Unless the name you have in mind is extremely unique, you’ll be hard-pressed to find name variations that are all available.

Using a domain and social media name checker lets you filter through hundreds of results within seconds. You can have recommendations that will let you form a short list of names that are viable for registration.

Contributes to Building a Good Reputation

Your business can operate without a website, but Namechk advises having one along with a corresponding domain name because it adds credibility. A domain and social media name checker can show suggestions that can help you establish your brand.

That’s because your domain and social media assets not only make you more visible to customers. They allow your business to have more interactions with them, which is beneficial for building brand loyalty.

Domain & Social Media Name Checker – Helps You Follow Best Practices

A domain and social media name checker also accounts for best practices when suggesting names. Business.com lists some of them such as localization, recall factor, and how easy they are to type in search browsers or social media platforms. When you input a name you like into the tool, it will provide optimal candidates based on these criteria or other similar metrics.

In addition to the above, a domain and social media name checker can also deliver creative name options that may help you stand out from the competition. A name that encapsulates your commitment to serving customers is good, but having one that’s catchy at the same time is even better.

Takes SEO Into Consideration

Digital Connect Mag notes that a good domain name can aid your SEO efforts. A name that signifies the greatest qualities of your business fosters consumer trust. A domain and social media name checker can point you toward some excellent options that could aid in achieving this goal.

Getting that trust means gaining more traffic to your website and social media pages. In turn, it helps you improve your search engine rankings, which then increases your brand awareness further. It’s a snowball effect from which any business will benefit greatly.

As discussed above, the advantages of using a domain and social media name checker go well beyond the initial stages of a business. Owning a name that’s exactly right for your company lets you paint a clearer picture of how to nurture your brand in the long run.

Start your journey by making a website that delivers your needs as well as those of your customers. We here at DFW Website Designers can guide you every step of the way.

This past month, I’ve been working on spam filters for my clients as well as for my business. In that time, I have accidentally turned off email on my iPhone. I didn’t think I checked emails THAT often. But it took me three days to stop constantly looking for it and get over it is missing from the phone. I never realized I was GREATLY addicted to checking email constantly.

Not Checking Email Can Be a Good Thing

About five years ago, I read a book by Julie Morgenstein called, “Never Check Your Email in the Morning.” In that book, it prioritizes that you should only check your email at certain times of the day and that email can be a distraction. Of course, that book was written long before we got more addicted to our smartphones.

Now between Twitter, Facebook, email and social media, our entire society has become a group of people who do nothing but look down and study their phones. I go to restaurants and see people eating together but not talking with one another but texting and pulling email on their phones. It took this unplanned experiment for me to realize that checking my email all the time is not good and rude to most around me. Furthermore, I realize I can get more done when I am not distracted by email on my phone.

It’s been two weeks and this experiment has changed my ability to communicate with those I was with. I now can read at the gym without being distracted. It has given me more productive in my work and allows me to focus more on the tasks at hand.

So I decided not to fix it.

I no longer check email on my phone.

Why I No Longer Check Email on my Phone

This little experiment has made me wonder what other elements can I cut out of my life? I suffer from ADD so anything that routinely distracts me needs to be examined. Can I schedule other parts? Perhaps social media, maybe telephone calls, other people that I work with?

I’m not telling you that you shouldn’t check your email, nor am I saying you probably shouldn’t check your email on your phone, but for me, I have found it completely liberating to no longer have access to email all the time. “I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”

Are you addicted to email? What other business elements do you do in access?

The post Why I No Longer Check Email on my Phone first appeared on DFW Website Designers - 817.247.6003.

When I started the web design business 10 years ago, the hardest discussion I had to convince clients to do was to buy a website. Three years ago, the biggest issue was to consider a redesign for mobile responsive. So what do you imagine is the answer to that question in 2019?

It’s time to consider an additional business landing page.

What is a Business Landing Page?

Nowadays most of my clients have a good website (or at least if I build them one). Now they need help with ads, promotions, email lists, or running social media campaigns. In that line of thinking, a single page landing page is easy to optimize and rank well on Google. The team at Leadpages, a company that specializes in conversions has this to say.

Because landing pages are designed to convert, one of the key advantages of landing pages is their ability to bring traffic to the next stage of the sales funnel. No other webpage has this kind of targeted approach, which means landing pages can truly be your digital marketing lifesaver.

Big SEO and Lead Gen Companies Use Landing Pages

Over the years, I have connected with SEO and lead generation companies. Let me give you a little secret. Call it a behind-the-scenes tip, which will help bring the discussion of landing pages to the forefront. After these high dollar companies sell you a lead generating packages, they immediately go to their office and have their staff create 20 or 30 landing pages that they quickly index and optimize. These landing pages generate leads which they then pass back to you the external client.

So my advice to you today is to consider an additional landing page or two, to help grow your leads for your small business.

So here comes my call-to-action. If you cannot build these landing pages for yourself, DFW Website Designers sells landing pages that are optimized for your particular business for a flat fee of $597. Or if that is too much money, we also rent landing pages turnkey for $49.97 a month.

Whether or not you take us up on this great deal, you should really consider a landing page for your small business.

How have landing pages helped your small business?

The post What’s a Landing Page & Do I Need One? first appeared on DFW Website Designers - 817.247.6003.

[W]ith more and more of our clients starting or adding eCommerce to their websites, I thought I would share Laurice Wardini’s great article from, Subscriptionly.net and infographic on the “60 Stats & Trends that Will Define the Future of eCommerce.” Enjoy!

Electronic shopping was introduced back in 1979 when English inventor Michael Aldrich connected a modified TV to a transaction-processing computer via telephone line and opened the information systems for secure data transmission. This technology became the foundation on which the eCommerce as we know it was built.

Today, eCommerce is used on a daily basis and living without it seems just complicated and inconvenient. The new technologies and innovations are continuously changing and exponentially improving the user experience and safety which, on the other hand, results in staggering eCommerce growth.

eCommerce paves the way for the new methods of making money that weren’t available before. For instance, dropshipping – a mode of product fulfillment that was only available to big corporations, is now something that anyone can do from the comfort of their own home. The best dropshipping products are usually purchased from Chinese marketplaces, such as AliExpress and Alibaba and resold for a markup.

By the end of 2018, the global eCommerce sales will reach approximately $2.8 trillion and in 2021 they will hit $4.5 trillion. With eCommerce evolving at a rapid pace, it can be hard to keep up with the latest trends. We here at Subscriptionly, keep a close eye on all things related to online sales and thought we’d share some 60 odd e-commerce stats and trends to get you ready for 2018/19.

[W]hen I was a kid I watched my parents flipped pages through the phonebook to find a plumber. Because everybody and anybody advertised there. As a 48 years old businessman, I would probably “Google” one on my iPhone (of course you should have a website that’s mobile responsive). Nevertheless, I have observed the generation coming after us instinctively open Facebook’s search bar to search. Stop the presses! (Okay, only some of you above a certain age will get that joke.) Yes, you read correctly! #1 Facebook is a SEARCH ENGINE too for your business. You probably keep up with your friend on Facebook but realize a certain segment of the population uses it like my parent’s phonebook.

Why Your Business Needs to Be on Facebook

#2 1.47 billion people use Facebook (as of 2nd quarter 2018) and it costs your business nothing but time to build a business fan page.

Now I could stop right here and end this conversation as that is enough evidence to convenience you that you need a Facebook business page business owners. But before I stop, go read Scott Ayres’ Top 10 Benefits of a Facebook Business Page.

#3 It’s Very Low Cost Marketing to Be on Facebook

In Scott’s article above he mentions the ability to actually market to a very, very, “Did I say very?” specific demographic for an extremely low cost. You, of course, cannot market to this demographic without having a business fan page, thus you have to be on Facebook. Here is a video from which I got a new client by spending no more than $10 by boosting a promotion on my business Facebook fan page. Watch it below…

So if you don’t have a Facebook business page go create one now. Here is Facebook’s explanation on creating one.

It’s been estimated that there are well over 100,000 US-based retailers with online stores, each one producing over $12,000 of revenue each year through online commerce. In this competitive market, corners of the commercial internet are looking to set themselves apart in a multitude of ways in pursuit of keeping the customer satisfied. These range from the obvious: like mobile-friendly, to the futuristic, like use of virtual reality. Let’s take a look.

Designing for Every Device You Can Access a Website On

From e-readers to smartphones to tablets, the consequences of responsive design are significant. Responsive design, also known as omnichannel design, is where web pages can detect the size of users’ screens and adjust the content on them automatically. Without it, some websites end up being very difficult to navigate. With 45% of total e-commerce purchases likely to be made on mobile by 2020, it’s crucial to make sure your website is ready.

Keeping Customers Hooked

Even after a customer has made a purchase, many online stores now think about how to keep these people engaged enough to consider making another purchase in the future, creating a more regular relationship. Effective digital marketing means it’s no longer a large time commitment for even the smallest of businesses to set up a regular newsletter or keep social media platforms active. In this way, previous customers stay informed about new products or promotions. As one marketing professional put it in an interview: “For small brands it’s often all about the story – if they can differentiate themselves from the big faceless brands out there and connect with consumers on an emotional, more personal, level.” Regular communication provides a clear avenue to do this.

Bringing the Product to Life

Businesses’ product visualization brings the sense of the product in a more vivid way to potential clients. It’s likely you’ve come across this on larger retail websites already: many contain the option to say, view a video of how a dress moves on a live model as they’re walking. For businesses selling complex products, like vehicles or architecture, a 3D visualization can be the start of a conversation with a customer which can guide the final product towards exactly what the client wants.

Augmented and virtual reality is the natural next step of product visualization and there’s significant innovation going on in this area already. Users of the interior design app Hutch take a picture of the room they’re trying to style, swipe through ‘design filters’ and then finalize their products within the preselected theme. Meanwhile, through Avametric, shoppers can try on clothes virtually, using the company’s ‘clothing-fit’ technology.

Future-Proofing Your Online Business

All of this can seem overwhelming for a small business owner on a limited budget, but there are ways you can incorporate these three trends into your business. It’s easy to check whether your web pages look ok on a mobile, and keeping in touch with existing customers is a great way to find out what they like and dislike about your products. Even for product visualization, every shopper appreciates plenty of photos of the product, and free returns if it ends up not living up to the promise. In such a competitive online landscape, it’s important to do whatever you can to ensure your online business stands out!

[W]hen we think of web design, it is rare to consider users that have color blindness, or color vision deficiency (CVD). However, this condition is incredibly common and can really alter how a website is perceived. CVD affects 1 in 12 men in the USA and approximately 1 in 200 women. This is thought to be higher in Caucasian men particularly and the figure is estimated to be 10% of men. When you are designing a website, taking into consideration CVD really can make it user-friendly and reduce your bounce rate.

Web Design for Color Blindness – What is CVD?

CVD is the inability to distinguish blue, red and green streams of light. The most common form is red/green color blindness, where any colors that have red or green as part of them are muddled. It is caused by a mutation in the X chromosome, which is why men are more likely to be affected by the condition than women. Women, however, can be carriers of the genetic condition, without actually having any of the symptoms. Other types of CVD include Protan color blindness, which affects the ability to distinguish red light and Protanopia which affects the ability to distinguish blue and purple light.

How Does this Affect Web Design?

Web design is all about accessibility – creating a website that is simple to use, intuitive in the use buttons and functions. Having a site that is overly busy in pictures and information can put users off, and they will look elsewhere for the things that they need. When you are trying to convey a message, then it is important to use both colors and symbols that are easily distinguishable. Web design has advanced enormously since the 1980s, but even the oldest domains on the internet were designed with the customer’s needs in mind, this is good practice. Things like error messages are often put in red, but unless there are symbols next to them clarifying what is wrong, they can be missed if the website user has CVD.

Keeping Design Clean and Sleek

Keeping web design minimal and clean is aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but also helps users with CVD. Obviously, the color palette that you use is extremely important, but it is also good to be conservative in the choices you make. Using a limited amount of colors will look classic and timeless, and it will also help cut down any confusion. Some color combinations are particularly difficult for people with CVD, not just red/green. Green/brown, blue/grey and green/black can commonly cause problems too.

Instead of concentrating on color, instead, use different textures and patterns on block images to show contrasts. This is particularly useful when featuring infographics and graphs. It is also a good idea to place text next to important images, to clarify their meaning. That way it is easy to understand the information that is needed.

When you are designing a website, considering users with CVD can help make your website look clean, and helps to really focus on making the website content clear. You can’t rely on color to bring across the message that you’re trying to convey. A well-placed text will really help make your website user-friendly.

Google File Sharing, Oops! The file you are sharing is not encrypted!

In storing files online, people nowadays rely much on cloud storages because aside from the convenience, storage sites now offer a bigger space per user. But have you ever bothered to ask yourself how secure is it to upload your files to these sites?

The most popular cloud storage available today is the Google Drive and its email platform, Gmail. (Who on earth doesn’t know Google?) One of the things these sites boast about their storage system is the security and privacy.

Wait… Did I just mention privacy? Perhaps it’s time to take a pause and discuss some dark facts and the pitfall of sharing files on Google.

How Secure is Secure?

Of course, before you signed up for these free cloud storages and file sharing apps, they bragged about their “A+” security. Isn’t it one of the reasons you trusted them with your precious files? We always fall for “Your privacy is our concern.” Before you answer “yes”, let us quickly go through this list and see if Google really lives up to their promises.

1. Terms of Service.

While Google assured their users that they retain ownership of any intellectual property rights of any file uploaded to their system, this statement seems to control those rights.

“When you upload, submit, store, send or receive content to or through our Services, you give Google (and those we work with) a worldwide license to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works (such as those resulting from translations, adaptations or other changes we make so that your content works better with our Services), communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content.

The rights you grant in this license are for the limited purpose of operating, promoting, and improving our Services, and to develop new ones. This license continues even if you stop using our Services (for example, for a business listing you have added to Google Maps).”

Yeah, this sounds like no matter what you feel about it, once you have uploaded what’s yours, Google has the right to use it for “improving” their services. And don’t worry. Even if you delete your file and your account, Google can still continue to use the content. (Looks like there is no escaping the system.)

2. Google has to comply with world governments.

Uh-oh. Even just hearing it makes you wonder. What is it for? Edward Snowden, a former NSA employee exposed that the government is spying on its people collecting telephone records from millions of Verizon customers. He also revealed that Google and Facebook made it easier for the government to collect data from their users through a program called Prism. They say it’s to detect possible terrorist attacks beforehand, but who would ever believe that?

3. Ownership of files can be transferred.

Careful! Transferring ownership to another person can be done as easy as 1, 2, 3, and this sometimes happens accidentally! For enterprises, yes, it’s prone to data leaks.

4. Send without sharing option.

One of the most critical parts of sending files via email is the sharing option. When you send a drive file to someone who does not have the permission to view it, there’s a “Send without sharing” option in Gmail. Otherwise, your file will become public.

5. “Wherever you are, we are there.”

Also known as, “One Account. All of Google”. Indeed, it is easier to manage your Google apps with just one account and password, but the downside of it is that you are more vulnerable to hacking. One account hacked, all of Google.

These are just some of the risks in using Google and probably all other cloud storage and file sharing platforms online. For Gmail, phishing is still one of the main security problems, so make sure to clean your inbox regularly and never click on suspicious links especially if you found them in your spam folder.

Since Google does not use client-side encryption, you might want to consider doing a pre-encryption setup using a third-party software on your computer before uploading your files. It is extremely important that you know the pros and cons before using any services on the Internet. Always remember: Your privacy, your responsibility.

The post Privacy at Risk: The Hidden Dangers of Google File Sharing first appeared on DFW Website Designers - 817.247.6003.
